Integrated Communications
Manufacturers' Association for
Telecommunications

Overview

The Association exists for the mutual benefit of the Members
and not for the purpose of making a profit.

History:

ICMA was formed in late 1987, early 1988 at the suggestion of Infotron Systems Ltd (which was later merged with Gandalf International). Marketing executives of Motorola ISG, Telematics International, Timeplex, Master Systems and Infotron met initially to investigate the common problems which were delaying the launch of new products on the UK market. The conclusion was quickly reached and the major causes for delays were identified as the Type Approval (homologation) of products. The marketing attendance at meetings was soon replaced with Approvals (Compliance) Engineers and the format of the meetings has changed very little since then.

For a short period between 1990 and 1991 ICMA held its meetings at the Leicester Square offices of the Electronic Engineering Association (now FEI) under a trial affiliation arrangement. But we found that the independence of ICMA was in jeopardy and therefore meetings reverted to being hosted at Members Offices.

The purpose of the Association is to:

  1. develop Members’ understanding and awareness of the Type Approval process, associated regulations, and standards applicable to telecommunication products;
  2. inform Members of new or changing procedures, regulation, standards or legislation which have an impact upon telecommunication products;
  3. improve the general regulatory environment through contributions to appropriate bodies or organisations; and
  4. assist with resolution of approvals issues which any member might encounter.

Meetings:

ICMA-tel meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at various locations throughout the UK.
